This course is based on the book: Understanding Islamic Sciences by Ayatollah Mutahhari and is offered in the 7th term of Hujjat Academy in Stanmore, UK.
Part of the book is on fiqh and there is also a part on usool al fiqh. For this course, the collection on fiqh is studied and it begins with first defining fiqh.
The reason for choosing this topic is to understand the development of the science of fiqh and how, over centuries, without any interval, our scholars worked in this field and developed it, and alhamdulillah now we have very advanced fiqh. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Shia have the most sophisticated fiqh among the schools in Islam or even outside Islam. If you go outside Islam, it’s even more clearer that they don’t have this much attention to fiqh.
Introduction to Usul al-Fiqh, based on a respected and well-known book, “Understanding Islamic Sciences”, by Ayotallah Mutahari.
The subject under consideration here is the ‘ilm, or knowledge of the principles of jurisprudence, usul ul fiqh. The two studies of jurisprudence and its principles are interconnected. They are interconnected in the same way, as will become clear, as the two studies of logic and philosophy are interconnected. The study of the principles is tantamount to a preparation to the study of jurisprudence, and it is for this reason that it has been named the principles of jurisprudence, for the word usul means roots or principles.
This series is based on the Introduction to ‘Irfan by Ayatollah Mutahhari. It was conducted in the UK in 2020 and it spans 14 lectures.
Islamic mysticism, in both its theoretical and practical dimensions, is presented through this series of lectures. Spirituality is the core of every rite and practice in Islam; Muslims are called to be constantly mindful of God. There have been many men and women throughout Islamic history who dedicated their lives to God in various ways and forms, and one important source of that is found in the mystical teachings and practices of great spiritual and mystical personalities. Bearing in mind that, like any other field of study or practice, there have been varying degrees of success and authenticity. Through this series, Sheikh Shomali will try to familiarize with Islamic mysticism in an organised and scholarly way, based on some of the most well-known and respected works. The aim is to enable ourselves to taste the sweetness of journeying with both heart and mind towards a deep, clear, intimate, and uninterrupted experience and condition of connection with God and nearness to Him.
This book is based on a series of 30 lectures delivered by Dr. Mohammad Ali Shomali on Islamic Ethics in Qum 2012. The contents of the book are divided into five major sections with the following titles:

The Islamic science of akhlaq (‘Ilm al-Akhlaq al-Islami) is concerned with the study of moral virtues and vices – acquiring moral virtues, protecting against moral vices, or removing moral vices if already present – as well as good and bad actions. Thus, in the Islamic science of morality, we deal with both qualities of the soul and voluntary actions.
Since the beginning of the Hawza Ilmiyya of England in September 2014, a weekly class on Akhlaq (Islamic Ethics) has been conducted by Sheikh Dr Mohammad Ali Shomali. Every Monday during the academic sessions, Hawza students from different years and levels attended these lectures. These lectures have been designed to address some of the major issues in the field, ranging from Islamic theory of ethics to detailed discussions on some major moral virtues as developed by Muslim ethicists and moral philosophers.
This series is composed of 14 lectures delivered by Dr. Mohammad Ali Shomali in London 2018.
Moral Philosophy in Islam is a discussion that seeks to give answers to core questions in contemporary Moral Philosophy. To define it more clearly, this would be an introduction to Islamic Moral Philosophy.

- Moral concepts, predicates vs subject
- Moral use and their use outside morality
- Where do moral rulings and instructions originate from?
- What is meant by Moral Philosophy in contrast to Science of Akhlaq?

Sheikh Shomali discusses the foreword of the book “Munyat al-Murid” by Al-Shaheed al-Thani. He underlines the greatness of knowledge and some benefits of acquiring it and notes that not all types of knowledge will bear the fruits of Allah’s pleasure. One must be aware that there are certain conditions for acquiring knowledge and a specific etiquette that needs to be followed. Many seekers of this noble knowledge do not achieve anything while others do achieve something but it takes them a long time to get there. For some, their knowledge even takes them further away from Allah and darkens their hearts. Thus, this book will provide a summary of the conditions, etiquette, and duties for those who seek knowledge.

Al-Bāb al-Hādī ʿAshar (Arabic: الباب الحادي عشر), literally meaning, “The Eleventh Chapter”, is in fact the eleventh chapter of Minhaj al-salih fi mukhtasar al-misbah. It is one of the most famous classic texts on Kalām or Islamic Theology, and was written by al-‘Allama al-Hilli (d. 726/1325). Minhaj al-salih fi mukhtasar al-misbah (The Path of the Righteous on Summarizing al-Misbah) is a summary of al-Shaykh al-Tusi’s Misbah al-mutahajjid, a book of supplications and rituals. Allamah al-Hilli completed his summary in ten chapters, but added an eleventh chapter to discuss the doctrinal beliefs of Islam. He felt he should add this chapter since the validity of acts of worship is dependent on the correctness of one’s belief, and the pleasure of worship comes only after knowing God.
There are tens of commentaries and translations of this book. Among these commentaries, that of al-Fadil al-Miqdad (d. 826/1425), al-Nafi’ yawm al-Hashr fi sharh bab al-hadi ‘ashar, has attained distinction among scholars and Islamic seminaries.
An English translation was published in London in 1928.

This commentary is by the most famous student of Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, al-‘Allama al-Hilli. Some believe that if this commentary had not been written, maybe his exact purpose in this book would have never become known. Both the text and commentary are considered as the most important and influential texts in the field of Kalam. In the Hawza Ilmiyyah educational system, this book is normally studied after Allamah Hillis’ commentary on al-Bab al’ Hadi ‘Ashar.

Divine Justice is the special prerogative of theology, but Martyr Murtada Mutahhari is exceptional in that in this book, he chooses to approach the subject from an altogether different perspective. He uses philosophical methods to solve the problems and questions that surround the issue of Divine Justice. It can be seen that in some ways he has succeeded from the fact that his book has become a classic of contemporary Islamic literature.

This series represents the second level of Principles of Jurisprudence. With the terminology already learned and the general framework of usul al fiqh that has already been grasped in the introductory course, this course was delivered. It aims to help us better understand the way our scholars argue and the reasoning used in fiqh. It is based on the book Al-Mujaz fi Usul al-Fiqh compiled by Ayotallah Subhani, one of the leading maraji’ and great scholars who has greatly contributed to the Islamic library of books. This series spans 60 lectures and was delivered at the Hawza Ilmiyah of England over the course of a year of studies.
